Breuning Olaf

Olaf Breuning was born in 1970 in Schaffhausen (Switzerland). He lives in New York. He took part in numerous exhibitions all around the world, e.g.: Olaf Breuning, Jim Shaw, Cindy Sherman, Metro Pictures gallery, New York, 2006; Olaf Breuning: Home, Sketch Gallery, London, 2006; Queen Mary, Air de Paris, Paris, 2005; solo exhibitions in 2005 at Meyer & Kainer Gallery, Vienna and at Kodama Gallery in Osaka.

Olaf Breuning draws inspiration for his works from his numerous journeys. Being a nomad, he realises his films or pictures in a place of his current exhibition. He shows cultures distant from one another, arranging them in an exotic and original mishmash. The artist uses gadgets typical for souvenir production, and he makes pastiches of TV travel programmes. His works can be read as a comment on a kind of progressing colonisation done on the part of tourist industry, where poor countries or regions are “invaded” by tourists from rich countries. His pictures are a “postcard” projection of our idea of ethnically foreign cultures and of contemporary subcultures.
